The Author Dr. J. Rodney Short has always been passionately interested in those who have had to overcome something and those who have refused to yield to adversity. The interest and his background in classical rhetoric, motivation, communication, and leadership studies have afforded him the opportunity to speak to thousands of people from varied, diverse backgrounds. He has appeared on the program as a sectional speaker with such notables as Norman Vincent Peale and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. He shares with his audience the information he has gained through many years of studying the "great minds" and what makes people “over comers”. For over thirty years Dr. Short has taught graduate-level administration courses at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, specializing in communications and leadership skills. He was formerly the Associate Dean of the College of Education. He received his doctorate from the University of Alabama, his master's from the University of Texas at El Paso and his bachelor's from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. His earlier experiences included a stint as an oilfield roustabout, farmer, truck driver, lifeguard, U.S. Marine, coach, teacher, and school administrator. He has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Mentor Award from the University of Texas Superintendent's Academy. He is especially proud that his son and daughter have chosen professional careers that enhance the lives of others. His son, Kirk Rodney, is an Occupational Therapist and his daughter, Dr. Kelly Rod Fox, is a Literacy Consultant. Due to changing circumstances, Dr. Short misses farming, ranching, and “unwinding,” on his 85-acre spread north of Dallas where he lived in one of the oldest houses in Denton County. |
